To facilitate cooperation and promote regional economic development, Ukraine and Poland should work out, as suggested by Polish Minister of Agriculture Czesław Siekierski, a mutual licensing mechanism for the export of agricultural products. This proposal was presented during a meeting held this Monday (11) with Mykola Solskyi, Minister of Agrarian and Food Policy of Ukraine.
As Siekierski explained, the change in logistics routes and the liberalization of trade between the EU and Ukraine led to a sharp increase in imports of some products agri-food for Poland. Due to protests by local producers, the Polish government introduced a series of restrictions on certain Ukrainian goods.
“We want to develop a method of protection against the negative consequences of importing agricultural products from Ukraine, acceptable to all participants. Furthermore, the cancellation of the current import ban in the future will require the preliminary implementation of solutions that effectively and systematically regulate this trade”, justified Siekierski.
On the other hand, Solskyi noted that Ukrainian exporters are increasingly using alternative “solidarity routes” to export agricultural products. This will help ease the load on Poland's transport infrastructure and reduce traffic across the country. Both sides agreed to continue negotiations on March 18 in Warsaw. This meeting will be a preparation for the Polish-Ukrainian intergovernmental consultations scheduled for March 28, 2024,” he added.
