Wheat provides 19% of the calories and 21% of proteins consumed by humans globally. But a fungal disease called (FHB) or ear fusariosis, caused by the phytopathogenic fungus Fusarium graminearum, has increased considerably in Europe over the last ten years.

To protect consumers, the European Union commission has established legal limits for the levels of vomitoxin, also known as Deoxynivalenol or DON, is one of the most common mycotoxins and can contaminate a wide variety of grains, including wheat. Scientists have discovered that the threat from mycotoxins – particularly in southern Europe – has increased significantly.
Vomitoxin was found in all European countries studied and overall, it was found in half of all wheat samples intended for food. In the UK, vomitoxin was found in 70% of food wheat produced between 2010 and 2019. Yet almost all (95%) of the vomitoxin contamination recorded in European wheat was within legal limits.
