Last Friday (31), most Brazilian states ended the first stage of 2019 of the vaccination campaign against foot-and-mouth disease. Piauí, Maranhão and Pará will have an extension until June 15, due to adverse weather conditions and health problems with Classical Swine Fever, a specific case in Piauí.
Amazonas will extend immunization until June 7th. Across the country, the forecast is that 218 million cattle and buffaloes will be vaccinated. In the same period of 2018, 198 million were vaccinated. Producers must contact the local veterinary unit to prove vaccination within 15 days, in accordance with each state's regulations, avoiding the application of penalties provided for by law.
According to several reports from producers, animals showed fewer reactions at the application site (lumps, inflammations or irritations) with the 2 ml vaccine, which is partly explained by the absence of the saponin substance in the composition of the new vaccine. Unlike the last vaccination phase, in 2018, there was no shortage of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine in any state during the campaign. The remaining vaccines in the dosage of 5 ml (old vaccine) were used only in the state of Rondônia, upon authorization from MAPA and as agreed between the state and the product manufacturers.
Regarding the withdrawal of vaccination in the state of Paraná – scheduled for November – the Foot and Mouth Disease Division, in Mapa, explains that it will depend on some adjustments, including the installation of a checkpoint on BR 116 on the state border with São Paulo and the hiring of inspection agents for the state veterinary service. Currently, Paraná has 31 posts to monitor the entry of animals and products of animal origin.
If all the actions agreed at the last meeting of block V (of the foot-and-mouth disease strategic plan) are met by September, Paraná will be able to suspend vaccination for the disease in 2019, being exempt from the second stage that will take place in November. The cattle herd in Paraná totals 9.3 million heads.
