Soybean, corn and rice harvests are expected to total more than 226 million tons, accounting for 93.7% of Brazilian agricultural production in 2017: soybeans with 47.5%; corn, 41.1%; and rice with 5.1%. The information comes from the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA), released today by IBGE.
Production estimated by IBGE in September for the 2017 harvest is around 242 million tons, an increase of 30.3% in relation to the total 2016 harvest.
In the survey, released monthly by IBGE, corn production increased by 1.1%, in the comparison between September and August. “The latest harvests in Mato Grosso increased production and updated this number”, explains Carlos Antônio Barradas, IBGE researcher.
Compared to 2016, corn also appears as one of the crops that should most boost Brazilian agricultural production in 2017, with an increase of 55.2%. According to Barradas, this year's rains have contributed to more abundant harvests. “Last year, the drought greatly damaged crops, especially in the Central-West”, highlights
