The Brazilian Agriculture and Livestock Confederation (CNA) participated in the meeting of the Sectoral Chamber of the Milk and Dairy Products Production Chain of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) this Tuesday (12).
The participants discussed, among other topics, the lines of research and contributions that Embrapa can present to the production sector to contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse gases by cattle, taking into account the commitments made by Brazil during the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP-26).
The subject was presented by Embrapa Dairy Cattle researcher, Luiz Gustavo Pereira, who highlighted the lines of research conducted by the company in order to contribute to greater efficiency in production by reducing gas emissions. Technologies were shown for working in the rumen environment, pasture management and animal feeding, among others.

“Today, most of the parameters used to measure gas emissions are based on European or North American models, which overestimate gas emissions from Brazilian agriculture. It is necessary for these indicators to be tropicalized so that we can prove the contribution that agriculture can offer for Brazil to fulfill the commitments made at COP-26”, stated the president of the Chamber and of the National Dairy Cattle Commission of the CNA, Ronei Volpi.
Another topic discussed at the meeting was the need to regulate the nomenclature of products of plant origin similar to dairy products, due to the risk they pose in misleading consumers by using the terminology “milk”. According to the CNA's technical advisor, Guilherme Souza Dias, the CNA has been working on actions regarding the subject and supports PL nº 10,556/2018, by federal deputy Tereza Cristina (PP-MS), which establishes the correct specification of the word “milk” on food packaging and labels.
The members of the Chamber also analyzed the current situation of PL 1,293/2021, on self-control, which should enter the Federal Senate's agenda in the next few days or after the parliamentary recess. Federal deputy Aline Sleutjes (PROS-PR) was present at the meeting and spoke about Brazil's role in the issue of food security and sustainable production.
