Ukrainian farmers have sown 4.68 million hectares of winter grains as of October 28 for the 2025 harvest. This represents 90.2% of the total planned area, which is 5.19 million hectares, the Agriculture Ministry said on Tuesday.
According to the Ministry, this area includes 4.13 million hectares of wheat winter wheat, which corresponds to 92.2% of the projected area for the crop. Traditionally, winter wheat accounts for about 95% of Ukraine's total wheat production each year.
In addition, farmers also planted 486,100 hectares of winter barley. In addition, the area dedicated to rye was 66,000 hectares. In this way, the variety of winter grains planted was expanded.
Weather threatens winter harvest in Ukraine
Last week, Ukrainian state meteorologists warned that most of the country’s winter crops are under threat, as nearly all seedlings remain underdeveloped due to unfavorable weather conditions. Record drought this summer and early fall has forced many farmers to sow in dry soil. Conditions have only begun to improve after recent rains.
The Agriculture Ministry did not provide additional comparative data on current crop conditions, but said that last year farmers had sown 5.34 million hectares of winter crops as of Oct. 31, including 3.73 million hectares of wheat.
For 2025, the estimated area for the wheat harvest is approximately 4.5 million hectares, according to the Ministry.
Ukraine recently completed the 2024 wheat harvest. The country harvested approximately 22 million metric tons, maintaining the same volume harvested in 2023. These results reinforce the importance of Ukrainian agricultural production.
