According to the weekly analysis of the Agricultural Situation Bulletin, published by the Department of Rural Economy (Deral) of the State Secretariat for Agriculture and Supply (Seab), the harvest of wheat 2024, therefore, should see a reduction, with production estimated at 3.1 million tons. This represents a drop of 14% compared to the 2023 harvest. In 2023, it was 3.6 million tons, that is, 17% below the expected for the current harvest of 3.8 million tons.
Furthermore, the main factor behind this reduction is the drought, which has hit the northern region of Paraná hard. This is where the crops already harvested have had an average productivity of less than 2,000 kg/ha across more than 70,000 hectares. With more than a quarter of the remaining crops in poor condition, productivity is expected to remain low in the coming weeks.
In addition to the drought, frosts have also negatively impacted production, although the extent of this damage is not yet fully clear. We will release more precise data in the September update as harvest progresses in the affected areas.
On the other hand, barley has shown resilience to adverse weather conditions, with production estimated at 331.5 thousand tons, an increase of 19% compared to the 2023 harvest, which was 278 thousand tons. The drought was less severe in southern Paraná, and the longer barley cycle helped the crop escape significant losses during frosts.
