Brazil is expected to harvest new records for soybeans and cotton in 2020, according to data from the January Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production, released this Tuesday, 11th, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Soybean production is expected to grow by 8.7% compared to 2019, totaling 123.3 million tons.
The rice harvest will be 1.0% larger, totaling 10.4 million tons. Upland cotton cultivation is expected to grow by 1.6%, for a total of 7.0 million tons.
As for corn, the expectation is for a decrease of 4.4% in production, due to an increase of 3.9% in first harvest corn, but a decrease of 7.3% in second harvest corn. Total corn production will be 96.2 million tons in 2020, with 27.0 million tons of corn in the first harvest and another 69.1 million tons in the second grain harvest.
Rice, corn and soybeans are the three main products in this group, which, together, represented 93.2% of the production estimate and accounted for 87.2% of the area to be harvested.
The area to be harvested for corn increased by 1.3% compared to 2019, with an increase of 3.6% in first-crop corn and an increase of 0.4% in second-harvest corn.
The soybean area grew by 2.4%, while the herbaceous cotton area increased by 5.8%. On the other hand, there was a decline of 2.5% in the area to be harvested for rice.
