The Kremlin said today (17) that it has suspended its participation in the Black Sea grain agreement, which makes Ukrainian exports possible through ports in the region. Started on August 1st last year, the initiative was mediated by Turkey and the United Nations (UN).
Russia had already been signaling its discontent with the deal over the past few weeks. Despite not suffering any direct sanctions from the West, given that Russian agricultural inputs and products are considered essential for global food security, Moscow claimed that financial and logistical obstacles were hampering the flow of its commodities.

“Unfortunately, the part of these Black Sea agreements regarding Russia has not been implemented so far, so their effect has ended,” said Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman. “As soon as the Russian side of the agreements is fulfilled, the Russian side will return to the implementation of this agreement immediately,” he added.
Under the agreement, around 33 million tons of cereals and oilseeds were transported from Ukraine.
