Continuing to monitor the impacts resulting from the new Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the Federal Inspection Service (SIF) released its third activity report this Tuesday (16). Considered an essential activity, inspection and surveillance services continue to be fully covered, ensuring the supply of animal products in the country.
There are 3,303 establishments registered with the SIF that produce products of animal origin in the areas of meat and meat products, milk and dairy products, honey and bee products, eggs and fish and their derivative products.
In May, the SIF responded to emergency demands that resulted in the authorization of 205 slaughter activities in shifts or days in addition to the regular operational schedule of poultry, beef and pork slaughterhouses. 27 additional shifts have already been scheduled and authorized in advance for the month of June.
The number of poultry slaughtered in April increased by approximately 1% compared to April 2019. Pork slaughterhouses recorded practically the same number of pigs slaughtered in April 2019, with a reduction of less than 1%. Regarding beef slaughterhouses, April recorded a reduction of 20% in the number of cattle slaughtered, which represents approximately 388 thousand cattle that were no longer slaughtered compared to April 2019.
In addition, other activities were highlighted, such as the analysis of 4,156 requests for registration of animal products for human consumption entered into the Agricultural Management Platform System of the Federal Inspection Service's Management Information System (PGA-SIGSIF) between March and May. Regarding the registration of establishments, 111 new establishments were registered in the SIF between January and May.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply has been monitoring, together with companies and representatives of the production sector, the situation of Covid-19 cases in industrial units and the measures adopted to protect industrial workers and public servants in the exercise of their activities. In May, 47 slaughterhouses under federal inspection halted their activities, 39 of which were temporarily halted for commercial reasons unrelated to the transmission of the Coronavirus, and eight were due to temporary closures determined by external agencies (Health Department, Labor Department and Labor Prosecutor's Office).
