What are the impacts of 5G on Brazilian agriculture?

According to data from the Brazilian Rural Space Atlas, from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), of the 5.07 million rural establishments, 3.64 million properties still operate offline. The development of the new technology promises to boost the agribusiness sector in Brazil, providing greater connectivity for farms and producers. According to information from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), the increase in the gross value of Brazilian agricultural production will be 6.3%, with the increase of 25% in field connection.

For Breno Cerqueira, director of Technology and Innovation at Prodap, this reality could soon change. “The arrival of 5G could be a game changer for the sector, especially in Brazilian agriculture. It is necessary to rethink the way we do things to achieve increasingly better results and technology is the basis of this entire universe”, believes Breno.

Advancement in productivity

According to the director, many advances cannot currently be achieved due to the lack of quality connectivity in the field. For Breno, 5G can make it possible, for example, to install sensors in animal drinking fountains to check the quality of water and food in the trough. “With the advancement of this technology, a range of possibilities opens up to increase access to information, process analysis and, consequently, productivity”.

Another important point highlighted by Breno within the scope of 5G is the trend towards democratization of technology in the countryside, mainly with the reduction of costs for producers. “With the opening of this possibility, the barrier to adopting new technologies is reduced and the positive results in agriculture as a whole gain a new level”, he states.

Communication and competitiveness improvements

Finally, the director believes that communication within farms can also advance with 5G. According to Breno, connectivity can bring the team of producers closer together so that they can solve problems at the exact moment each area requires it.

“All these advances will improve production efficiency and margins, bringing greater competitiveness to agriculture, both in the domestic and foreign markets, including innovations in the environmental area, a growing demand that is increasingly necessary for the sector”, he concludes.
