Porto Alegre, May 27, 2022 – The Brazilian cotton market ends the fourth week of May with slightly lower prices, but still at a very high level. Business reports continue to be punctual and small in volume, with sellers not being very flexible in their orders, due to short availability in this off-season.
This Thursday (26), in the industrial hub of São Paulo, the indication of national fiber was R$ 7.93 per pound, compared to R$ 8.00 per pound on May 19th. Compared to the same moment last month and last year, it accumulated gains of 9.08% and 55.35%, respectively.

At the FOB export port of Santos/SP, the Brazilian product closed at 171.98 cents per pound. Compared to the New York spot contract (July 2022), it was 22.31% higher. A week ago, it was 24.6% higher. A month ago, it was 8% higher.
The Bahians began harvesting work. From now on, the cotton harvest in Western Bahia “goes into gear”, in the 303 thousand hectares of crops occupied by the crop in the region, in the 2021/2022 harvest.
The unusual distribution of rainfall – with excess planting and lack in the months of February, March and April – impacted productivity and production expectations, according to the Bahian Association of Cotton Producers (Abapa). The expected reduction, so far, should be around 10%, with productivity varying between 280 and 300 arrobas of cotton per hectare, against 311 arrobas previously estimated, and production of 530 thousand tons of lint (processed cotton), compared to 588 thousand tons originally expected.
