The IqPR – an index that measures the variation in prices received by São Paulo producers – closed May 2023 with a drop of 1.31%, reports the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA-APTA), of the São Paulo Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply. Separated by product groups, both the plant origin index (IqPR-V) and the animal origin index (IqPR-A) showed drops, respectively -0.71% and -2.87%.
Among the main drops observed in the month of May, corn (-24.7%), dwarf bananas (-9.63%) and beef (-7.21%) stood out. In relation to corn, the start of winter harvests in different regions has increased supply, which, together with the amount accumulated from production on the international market, has placed buyers in a low price situation. In the case of dwarf bananas, the reduction in consumption with the approach of winter added to a regular supply places prices in the field almost 10% lower than April. Beef, as a result of the drop in exports to China since February, has seen an expansion of the product on the national market, thus reducing the price of beef cattle, the researchers explain.

Of the products that saw increases in the period analyzed, potatoes (+8.68%) and eggs (+4.90%) stood out. For potatoes, as a reflection of the São Paulo off-season and the lower supply of the product in the state of Paraná, the prices received by producers increased in May compared to April. As for eggs, with a laying flock still lagging behind the recovery of post-covid-19 pandemic demand, the product's prices on farms continue to rise, improving the exchange rate for corn, the main item in poultry feed.
ACCUMULATED IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS
From May 2022 to May 2023, the IqPR recorded a drop of 0.29%. During this period, nine products that make up the basket had positive adjustments and seven showed declines.
