The secretary general of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Mohammad Barkindo, had a video conference this Monday with the Minister of Mines and Energy of Brazil, Bento Albuquerque, for talks about the energy market.
The bilateral meeting was the most recent in a series of meetings for discussions with oil-producing countries considered “key” and that are not part of the group, according to OPEC posts on Twitter.
“The countries discussed the latest developments in the oil markets... Barkindo also highlighted Brazil's significant role as one of the most prolific energy suppliers in South America,” wrote OPEC when reporting on the virtual meeting.
The secretary general also invited Albuquerque to participate in the group's multilateral cooperation platforms and to attend an international OPEC seminar in Vienna in June 2021, according to OPEC's Twitter.
The Ministry of Mines and Energy did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the online meeting with Barkindo.
In April, Minister Albuquerque even participated in a virtual meeting of G20 countries on the oil market, following an invitation from Saudi Arabia, which probed the country's interest in participating in efforts led by OPEC to reduce global supply.
The country, however, said at the time that it could not contribute to OPEC agreements due to legal issues, which prevent the government from influencing the production level of companies in the sector.
