The intense heat wave that is hitting Brazil continues to spread across the country, and the next few days will see high temperatures in practically all regions. According to Climatempo, the “very hot” period should last until the first week of spring, and could last until the end of the month in some areas in the interior of the country.

“This heat wave began on September 17, 2023 and is expected to last through the first week of spring. Some areas in the interior of Brazil, in part of the Central-West, North and Northeast, may experience very high temperatures until almost the end of September”, states the forecast.

Intense heat wave hits the Midwest and parts of Brazil

Regarding the trend of forecasting an extended heat wave, furthermore, it does not extend to the entire country, according to Climatempo. Central-West, Federal District, west and northwest of Minas Gerais and areas of Matopiba should feel the heat for more days and with more intensity. Similarly, we can probably compare it to one of the most intense heat waves recently experienced by Brazil, which occurred during the spring of 2020, as a result.

According to predictions from the GFS model, temperatures could already be close to 40ºC this Tuesday (19). The western range of Mato Grosso do Sul and areas of Mato Grosso will experience the most intense heat, with maximum temperatures reaching 42ºC. The 23rd predicts extreme temperatures. Maximum temperatures will reach 46ºC in Mato Grosso do Sul and exceed 43ºC in Goiás, São Paulo, Mato Grosso and Tocantins.

Finally, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) maintains the orange heat wave alert valid in all these areas until at least September 22nd. The Inmet alert is also valid for the north of Paraná during the period.

Rains

The advance of a cold front will increase areas of instability in southern Brazil in the coming days. The circulation of winds will increase humidity in the three states, but the most intense rains are predicted for Rio Grande do Sul.

According to data from the Cosmo model, the state of Rio Grande do Sul will record accumulations of up to 70mm in the central region of the state in the next 24 hours. The map also shows that the rain will be rapid and in other states the volume of rain is not expected to be significant.

“Possibility of thunderstorms, heavy and persistent rain in the west and south of Rio Grande do Sul. In the capital, the sun still manages to appear, with a lot of cloud cover, but rain can occur at any time of the day. It is only in the Mountain Region and the extreme north of RS that the blows still intersperse periods of improvement. Between Santa Catarina and Paraná, a sunny and very hot day”, adds Climatempo.
