On a farm located in the Russian capital, cows wear virtual reality glasses to make them believe they are in the field. According to their owners, once the virtual reality glasses arrive, the cows are more relaxed and their anxiety has reduced.
Farmers and veterinarians know that the amount of milk a cow produces per day depends on the amount of anxiety it accumulates. The more stressed she is, the less milk she will produce. And that's where virtual reality comes in.
Not all farms can afford to keep their cows grazing in the field, so they use different tricks to reduce nervousness and stress. There are machines that provide massage to cows, and on some farms they play classical music, which apparently relaxes them.
Anyone familiar with the world of virtual reality will immediately notice that the glasses these cows wear are not conventional ones. They are more elongated, the reason is that they were designed especially for cows.
The farm owner commissioned a company specializing in VR to customize glasses that fit the animals' faces. They also adapted the screen. It is known that cows distinguish red better and less blue and green. Therefore, the image of the summer countryside that they see on the screen is adapted to them.
After a few weeks of use, the farm owners ensure that the cows are more relaxed and the herd appears calmer. But they still don't have data on whether milk production has increased (or not). If things work, perhaps the market for virtual reality glasses for cows, goats and sheep will become a profitable business.
