The National Corn Ethanol Union (Unem), which represents the corn bioethanol production chain corn and cereals, is optimistic about the announcement of investments to promote the development of the national industry with a focus on sustainability and stimulating the bioeconomy and energy transition.
According to the 'New National Industry' plan, there will be two initiatives that cover the bioethanol sector. The following are planned:
- R$ 19.3 billion for expanding sustainability requirements for automobiles and for the production of new mobility technologies;
- Increase in the ethanol/gasoline mixture from 27.5% to 30%;
The investments will aim to reduce CO2 emissions from industry by 30%, increase biofuels in the transport matrix by 50% and increase sustainable use of biodiversity by 1% annually.
Unem emphasizes the importance of PL 4516/2023, “Fuel of the Future”, for the energy transition and reduction of emissions, focusing on renewable fuels.
Leading potential in sustainable biofuel production
According to the executive president of Unem, Guilherme Nolasco, Brazil has an entire value chain dedicated to the production of biofuels from biomass, such as sugar cane, and grains grown in the second harvest of areas already consolidated and without competing with food production.
“Public policies are fundamental for Brazil to become a global protagonist in the race for decarbonization, especially mobility. We have raw materials and technology to increase production without the need to open new areas. Furthermore, the corn and cereal bioethanol industry values exportable surpluses, boosting income and rural and urban development, emphasizes Guilherme Nolasco.
Currently, Brazil has 22 corn and cereal ethanol industries in operation and around ten projects authorized for construction. In the current harvest, 6.02 billion liters of corn ethanol will be produced, 17% of the national total.
