Minister of Agriculture highlights expectations of expansion in business between Brazil and China

After meetings with Chinese authorities and businesspeople on Friday (24), minister Carlos Fávaro spoke about Brazilian actions to strengthen the commercial partnership between the two countries.

The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, considered positive the meetings held by the ministry's delegation with the Chinese government and businesspeople, on Friday (24), to discuss new economic opportunities between Brazil and China. Throughout the day, the minister participated in seminars, meetings and meetings with this objective. In all, Fávaro reaffirmed the importance of strengthening trade relations with the Asian country.

“We talk about growth opportunities, new products for our businesses, the creation of new jobs. It was a day of meetings preparing protocols that will be signed by President Lula and the President of China, Xi Jinping”, said the minister.

He participated in two seminars held by Mapa and the Brazilian Embassy to discuss the inclusion of agricultural products in the countries' business portfolio, the use of biotechnology, increased investment in the sector and partnerships in the area of infrastructure, among other topics. The events served to bring together Brazilian and Chinese businesspeople in the sectors in which Brazil and China operate together and to discuss trade, investment and cooperation opportunities between them.

For the director of the Department of Trade Promotion and Investments of Mapa's Secretariat of Commerce and International Relations, Marcel Moreira, the meetings were also an opportunity for Brazil to reinforce the aspects of quality, health and reliability of Brazilian products.
“The seminars were also important for us to reinforce the emotional ties between Brazil and China, the Brazilian interest in cooperation and for us to see that there is a lot of room to increase the commercial relationship between the two countries”, assessed Marcel Moreira.

At the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Fávaro discussed the terms of research cooperation between Embrapa and the equivalent Chinese body. The neutralization of carbon emissions, with emphasis on the ABC program, the use of biopesticides and bioinputs, considered to lower the cost of agricultural production in an ecologically correct way, were some of the issues addressed by the minister during the visit.
“China has a large research study in this regard that will be very important for Brazil,” he said.

More investments

Another of the minister's commitments was to the main Chinese investment company in Brazilian agribusiness, Cofco, which is the largest buyer of soybeans, corn, sugar cane and the largest trader of Chinese agribusiness operating in Brazil. According to information, the meeting with the chairman of Cofco and the company's strategists focused on new business opportunities with Brazil.

“We brought them our messages of reciprocity, of intensifying our business in agriculture with sustainability, we talked about logistics infrastructure – and they are already investing in the Port of Santos to help our infrastructure become more competitive so that we can gain more space in the Chinese market,” he said.
