Minister of Agriculture announces corn options market

In the coming weeks, corn negotiation options will be launched on the market so that producers can protect themselves from price fluctuations, announced minister Blairo Maggi (Agriculture, Livestock and Supply), this Thursday (9), in Cascavel ( PR) during a visit to the 29th Show Rural Coopavel. Maggi said he had already discussed the matter with the Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance. '"It is necessary to anticipate the facts", observed the minister.

During the event, in which he participated in the launch of an application from Banco do Brasil, to serve producers with rural credit online, from the fair, and another application, from Embrapa, to monitor corn planting, Blairo Maggi celebrated Conab's announcement of a new record harvest for 2016/2017. A harvest of 219 million tons of grains is expected, of which more than 100 million are soybeans alone. The minister recalled that it was important to renegotiate the producers' debt last year. “If it weren’t for that, we might not have achieved this result,” he said.

The available pre-funding credit, which was announced by President Michel Temer in January, was also remembered by Blairo Maggi. “Farmers who are already harvesting well, who are already thinking about the future harvest, can access resources at the bank”, he explained.

The minister spoke about the technological advances in agriculture provided by Embrapa's research and also about recent trips he made abroad to break down barriers to agribusiness, many of them linked to environmental issues. “I've been around the world a lot to demystify, remove some of the bad impression or narratives that people make about Brazil.”

“We Brazilians also don’t want the forest to disappear. We have strong legislation”, he commented. “I was now at the European Parliament, I had two rounds of discussions with more than 30 parliamentarians, very heated. But, as you position yourself, putting in numbers that Embrapa provides from the Satellite Image Center, there is no dispute. Therefore, it is necessary to do this work, to provide these explanations”, he reported.

 Doctor Corn

Maggi and the president of Embrapa, Maurício Lopes, launched new varieties of soybeans and beans, in addition to the Doutor Milho application, to provide sustainable cultivation practices, greater productivity and income. Recommendations for each phase of plant development are described. The new variety of carioca beans is resistant to two of the main fungi that attack the crop. Soybean was developed in partnership with the Southern Research Support Foundation and has the characteristics of high productive potential, with good health and precocity, being resistant to the main diseases such as stem canker, frog's eye spot, powdery mildew, brown stem rot .

“We have the best genetic improvement programs in the world in the public environment in Brazil. The only country that is similar to Brazil in terms of the number of genetic improvement programs in the public domain is China”, said the president of Embrapa, Maurício Lopes. Embrapa, he informed, has 70 improvement programs. “We are delivering to the market, every year, dozens of new varieties, of açaí, cassava, tropical fruit plants, temperate fruit plants” . And he announced that the company has dedicated itself to pulses, grain legumes, “which will open up a fantastic space to reach the Asian market”.

Lopes considered the launch “very symbolic, because we are delivering to producers varieties with economic and social importance, which align with the logic of integrated management, which helps to face the challenge of intensifying thermal, water, nutritional stress, pests and diseases that come with climate change.”

R$ 1 billion from BB

Banco do Brasil developed an application for financing machines, trucks and agricultural implements during the event. The business model involves sending financing proposals via the Internet. The initiative reduces the period for releasing resources by up to 80% and the average time between the customer's request and the delivery of the equipment is 14 days. The expectation was to reach R$ 1 billion in hiring at the event.

The fair

Show Rural Coopavel is a grain and livestock fair, which last year generated business of R$ 1.2 billion. There is an expectation of an increase of 25% in this edition, reaching R$ 1.5 billion. There are more than 160 exhibitors from the sector in an area of 19,200 m². Environmental preservation is one of the organizers' concerns. Therefore, visitors will find teams responsible for the selective collection of recyclable materials produced during assembly, during the event and during disassembly. In a space that the public can follow, the materials are separated and given the appropriate destination. And there are exhibiting companies that are specialists in alternative energy sources, conservation, spring recovery, reforestation, recycling that present innovative solutions to rural producers.

This Friday (10), the minister and Maurício Lopes, visit Embrapa Soja, in Londrina (PR).
