The state is a reference in the production of olive oil.
Minas Gerais is a reference when it comes to olive farming in Brazil, the first extraction of extra virgin olive oil in Brazil, for example, was carried out by the Agricultural Research Company of Minas Gerais (Epamig) more than 14 years ago. Now the research company will be part of the National Institute of Science and Technology of Olive Growing and Brazilian Olive Oil, along with other research institutions and units of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa).

The olive growing institute was approved by a notice from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), to benefit the olive oil production chain. In addition to Brazilian research companies and universities, the INCT will have the participation of institutions from Uruguay, Italy and Spain. The objective is to meet the demands of Brazilian olive farming.
Epamig will actively participate in the meetings and decisions of the new INCT, the Minas Gerais research company already has four approved research studies that will address essential stages of olive growing, including: production of seedlings in nurseries, soil fertility, plant nutrition, post- harvesting and agro-industrial processing.
