According to Aenda (Association of National Agricultural Pesticides Companies), total revenue from the agrochemicals market in 2015 amounted to US$ 10.04 billion. Statistics reveal that the top ten concentrate US$ 8.491 billion in sales, which means no less than 84.52% of the total Brazilian market.
The result represents a drop compared to 2014, when the ten companies with the best sales performance in the agricultural pesticides sector sold US$ 10.12 billion. On the other hand, there was an increase in market concentration among the top 10 of around 1.5 percentage points.
The leadership remains with Syngenta, despite recording a drop in sales of US$ 295 million last year compared to 2014. The result refers to the last year before the company's sale to the state-owned China National Chemical (ChemChina). One of the main products responsible for the company's good performance in the country was the fungicide Elatus, used to combat the main disease that affects soybean crops in Brazil: Asian rust, responsible for losses of 70% to 100% in productivity.
In second place, Bayer also suffered a drop of US$ 233 million in its sales in Brazil on the same basis of comparison. The CropScience division recorded a drop worldwide, but especially in Latin America due to “political uncertainties, macroeconomic scenario and lower pest pressure”. Despite this, the multinational showed that it continues to invest in the country by opening two new agricultural research institutes within its innovation center in Paulínia (SP).
Following on the list is Basf, which maintained its third position with a smaller drop in sales (US$ 95 million) in relation to its direct competitors. According to the company, the problem in Brazil was the same as in Latin America: “A volatile [political/economic] environment and the devaluation of local currencies, especially in emerging markets, had a negative effect on our business”.
In fourth position, FMC overtook DuPont after acquiring Cheminova in April 2015, integrating the portfolios. Fifth placed, DuPont also announced a merger agreement with Dow (sixth position), but the operation was only announced in December 2015, having no practical effect or impact on the companies' sales.
Monsanto, Adama and Nufarm maintained seventh, eighth and ninth place, respectively, in the commercial performance comparison of 2015 over 2014. The big news in the list of the ten largest agrochemical companies in terms of sales in Brazil was Arysta, which entered the tenth position after its acquisition by Platform Specialty Products Corporation, which unified the company's portfolio with that of Chemtura (also acquired by the Platform Group) – which ended up pushing Ihara out of the Top 10.
