The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) declared a state of phytosanitary emergency due to the risk of an outbreak of Helicoverpa armigera in Maranhão. The measure, published last Wednesday (14.12) in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU), covers the “eastern and southern mesoregions of the State of Maranhão, to implement the plan to suppress the plague and adopt emergency measures”.
Ordinance number 265 establishes the term of validity of the phytosanitary emergency for one year, counting from publication in the DOU. Signed by the Minister of Agriculture, Blairo Maggi, the decision allows the use of products based on emamectin benzoate to control the pest in crops. The active ingredient is not registered in Brazil, but was authorized on a provisional basis.
Maranhão had already been declared in a state of phytosanitary emergency in 2015, by the then Mapa holder Katia Abreu. Ordinance 265 responds to a request from the Government of Maranhão, prompted by demands from rural producers in that state
