The fourth survey by DATAGRO Grãos for the 2022/23 soybean harvest in South America confirms the increase in production on the continent in relation to the previous season: 190.46 million tons, below the March projection, which indicated 193.52 million of t, but 3% above the 185.60 million t harvested in 2021/22.
The area sown with the oilseed was 66.54 million hectares, 3.2% higher than the previous harvest, which corroborates the consultancy's planting intention report and marks a new historical record. However, severe losses due to the lack of rain meant that the area actually harvested was reduced to 63.69 million ha, slightly below the 64.50 million ha in the 2021/22 season – losses of 2.50 million ha Argentina, 300 thousand ha in Uruguay and 50 thousand ha in Bolivia.

For Brazil, the largest global producer of soybeans, an estimated 155.91 million tons is estimated, an increase of 12% over the record of 138.82 million tons recorded in the 2020/21 harvest. This is the 16th consecutive year of expansion in the Brazilian grain area, going from 42.16 million ha to 44.40 million ha.
The soybean planted area in Argentina in the 2022/23 season was just 16.0 million ha, the third consecutive year of decline, with a drop of 1% compared to 2021/22. Because of the erratic weather, the harvested area fell to just 13.5 million ha (-16%). Production is estimated at 21.5 million tons, 50% lower than the 2021/22 harvest and 57% below the initial estimate – the country's worst result since 1999/00.
In relation to the area of Paraguay, it is estimated at 3.45 million ha, against the record of 3.76 million ha in 2021/22; production is estimated at 9.10 million tons, in the sum of summer and winter harvests, compared to 4.54 million tons in 2021/22.
For Bolivia, the survey indicates that the planted area reached a new record, rising from 1.45 million ha to 1.49 million ha, but due to the combination of drought at the beginning and excess rain at the end, the area actually harvested is falling to 1.44 million ha. Production fell from the previous estimate of 3.50 million tons to 3.14 million tons, 26% below the 2021/22 cycle.
In Uruguay, the sown area increased by 5%, to 1.22 million ha, however, due to the irregular climate, the harvested area was reduced to 900 thousand ha, a loss of 21% compared to the previous season. Production fell to 800 thousand tons, 77% below the initial projection of 3,430 million tons, and 75% below 2021/22.
