The Kremlin said on Monday (25) that it has also observed discussions in the circle of Donald Trump, president-elect of the United States, about a possible peace plan for Ukraine. On the other hand, it accused the current administration of Joe Biden of escalating the conflict, instead of seeking a diplomatic solution.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later commented on the matter after being asked about an interview given by Mike Waltz, Trump's nominee as national security adviser, to Fox News last Sunday (24).
In the interview, Waltz further emphasized Trump's concern about the fighting and the need to end the war responsibly.
Discussions on international involvement and possible plan
Waltz also mentioned the involvement of North Korea and Iran in the conflict, Russia's use of hypersonic ballistic missiles against Ukraine, and some Western countries' permission for Kiev to strike targets inside Russia. He said South Korea was considering getting involved in the conflict.
“We need to discuss who will be at the table and the structure of a possible agreement,” Waltz said.
Peskov said the Kremlin was aware of these comments and that President Vladimir Putin had signaled Moscow's willingness to engage in dialogue on Ukraine on several occasions.
“Indeed, from the circle of Trump supporters and those nominated for positions in the future administration, the words ‘peace’ or ‘peace plan’ are being heard,” Peskov said.
Putin sets conditions for peace, but Kiev rejects terms as unacceptable
However, the current (Biden) administration does not mention any of these words, while continuing to carry out provocative actions of escalation. This is the reality we face,” he added.
Putin outlined in June the conditions for the start of peace talks. Ukraine must abandon its ambition to join NATO and cede all four provinces claimed by Moscow.
Moscow claims that these conditions reflect the situation on the battlefield, where it claims to be advancing. However, Kiev rejects such terms, considering them an unacceptable surrender.
