The Department of Agriculture and Supply (SAA) through its Agricultural Defense Coordination (CDA) through its State Poultry Health Program (PESA) has been carrying out active surveillance activities for Avian Influenza throughout the State of São Paulo.
In the week of May 15th to 19th, a new incursion was carried out in the estuarine-lagoon complex of Cananéia – Iguape – Ilha Comprida, covering more than 80 km of beaches, collecting samples of free-living birds and observing 520 birds to verify the existence of symptoms compatible with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.

On that occasion, 32 residences with subsistence poultry farming were also inspected, with 235 birds being sampled to check whether the avian influenza virus was circulating.
PESA has established a close cooperative relationship with the Beach Monitoring Projects, through its general coordination, with daily exchanges of information on the situation on the beaches of São Paulo, regarding the appearance of dead birds and/or birds with symptoms.
Along the same lines, partnerships were established with the Forestry Foundation / Parks and Partnerships Coordination / Environmental Research Institute (IPA) / Wild Fauna Coordination (CFS) of the Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of the State of São Paulo, which covers surveillance for the entire State.
Events with groups of birds remain prohibited in the State of São Paulo, in accordance with MAPA Ordinance No. 572/2023.
The existence of suspected cases of Respiratory and Nervous Syndromes in Birds is common, it is not specific to this period in question, and in its entirety, these are always investigated in accordance with previously established standards and procedures.
There is currently no suspicion of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in the State of São Paulo, which is being analyzed at the Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory (LFDA/SP), or even with a positive result issued for Avian Influenza, therefore the State should not adopt any emergency health measures at this time.
Free-living wild birds are also victims of highly pathogenic avian influenza and any suspicion must be reported to the official veterinary service (pesa@cda.sp.gov.br or https://www.defesa.agricultura.sp.gov.br/enderecos).
Agricultural Defense also informs that there is no restriction on the consumption of eggs and poultry meat due to the existing outbreaks in Brazil.
“In addition, CDA continues to count on the support of producers, technical managers and other poultry professionals who continue to maintain and intensify biosecurity measures, so that the disease remains far from commercial flocks”, says Luís Fernando Bianco, CDA coordinator .
Regarding the publication of MAPA Ordinance No. 587/2023, it is specific to the federal sphere.
