Corn imports by China grow by 675% in September compared to September 2019

Chinese soybean imports totaled 9.79 million tons in September this year, an increase of 19.5% compared to the same period last year, according to data released by the Chinese Customs Department (GAAC). In the first nine months of the year, the Asian country imported 74.53 million tons of the oilseed.

Among soy derivatives, China acquired 140 thousand tons of soy oil in September this year, a positive variation of 49.7% in relation to the volume recorded a year earlier. From January to September this year, imports of the commodity totaled 780 thousand tons.

Chinese corn imports reached 1.08 million tons in September, a volume 675.1% higher than that recorded in September 2019. Year-to-date, the country imported 6.67 million tons of the cereal.

Of wheat, the Chinese imported 1.07 million tons last month, an increase of 584.5% in the annual comparison. In the first nine months of the year, cereal imports by the Asian country totaled 6.06 million tons.

China imported 210 thousand tons of cotton last month, an increase of 152.5% compared to the same period in 2019. Imports of natural fiber totaled 1.4 million tons between January and September this year.

Chinese purchases of palm oil reached 430 thousand tons in September, a volume 3.5% lower than that imported a year earlier. In the first nine months of the year, imports of the commodity reached 3.04 million tons.

Of dairy products, 270 thousand tons were imported by China in September, 23.8% more than in the same period of the previous year. Between January and September, the country purchased 2.47 million tons of dairy products from the foreign market.

Chinese sugar imports totaled 540 thousand tons in September, an increase of 29.1% compared to the same month of the previous year. In the year to date, imports of the sweetener reached 2.77 million tons.

Fertilizer purchases were 1.35 million tons, an increase of 21.7% compared to September last year. From January to September, China imported 8.16 million tons of fertilizers.
