IBGE projects grain harvest at 250.9 million tons

In September, the production of cereals, legumes and oilseeds estimated for 2021 had a further drop compared to the previous month (-0.3%%, or 752.5 thousand tons). As a result, the harvest should reach 250.9 million tons, 1.3% below (3.2 million tons less) the record production of 2020 (254.1 million tons). The Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA), by IBGE, shows that the area to be harvested is 68.3 million hectares, 4.4% larger (2.9 million hectares) than that of 2020. Compared to the previous month , the area to be harvested grew by 0.1% (55.7 thousand hectares).

Rice, corn and soybeans, the three main products in this group, represent 92.4% of the estimated production and account for 87.7% of the area to be harvested. In relation to 2020, there were increases of 6.1% in the corn area (1.4% in the first harvest and 7.8% in the second) and 4.8% in the soybean area. On the other hand, there were declines of 16.0% in the herbaceous cotton area and stability in the rice area.

In production, there were increases of 10.3% for soybeans – which should reach a record of 134.0 million tons – and 4.4% for paddy rice, which should total 11.5 million tons. For herbaceous cotton, an estimated drop of 17.5% and, for corn, a decrease of 16.4%, being -3.2% in the first harvest and -21.0% in the second.

The September information for the 2021 national harvest of cereals, legumes and oilseeds was 250.9 million tons and a harvested area of 68.3 million hectares. Compared to 2020, the area to be harvested grew by 4.4% (2.9 million hectares). Compared to forecasts in the previous month, there was an increase of 55.7 thousand hectares (0.1%).

The South (5.4%), Northeast (1.7%) and North (1.3%) regions saw increases in their estimates this month. The first is expected to produce 77.1 million tons (30.7% of the national total); the second, 23.0 million tons (9.2% of the total), and the third, 11.1 million tons (4.4% of the total).

On the other hand, in the Central-West, the largest producer (45.7% of the national total), a further decline is expected (-5.8%), expected to conclude 2021 with a harvest of 114.7 million tons. There was also a decline in the Southeast (-2.6%), with production estimated at 25.1 million tons (10.0% of the national total).

Mato Grosso leads national grain production, with a share of 28.5%, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (15.0%), Paraná (13.3%), Goiás (9.2%), Mato Grosso do Sul (7.7% ) and Minas Gerais (6.1%), which, together, represent 79.8% of the national total. Positive variations in production estimates, compared to the previous month, occurred in Mato Grosso (609.8 thousand tons), Rio Grande do Sul (176.3 thousand tons), Rondônia (32.9 thousand tons), Pernambuco (578 tons ), Federal District (210 tons), Espírito Santo (208 tons) and Rio Grande do Norte (11 tons).

Negative variations occurred in Paraná (-597.7 thousand tons), São Paulo (-515.2 thousand tons), Goiás (-269.2 thousand tons), Minas Gerais (-169.6 thousand tons), Alagoas ( -8.7 thousand tons), Maranhão (-4.4 thousand tons), Ceará (-3.1 thousand tons), Bahia (-3 thousand tons), Sergipe (-1.5 thousand tons), Acre (-85 tons), and Amapá (-50 tons).

Highlights in the September 2021 estimate compared to August

In September, positive variations stood out in the following production estimates compared to August: beans 3rd harvest (6.0% or 33.8 thousand tons), tomatoes (4.3% or 163.6 thousand tons), canephora coffee (1 .7% or 15.4 thousand tons), 2nd harvest beans (1.6% or 15.0 thousand tons), 1st harvest corn (0.9% or 232.1 thousand tons), 1st harvest beans (0.3% or 3, 0 thousand tons), soybeans (0.2% or 268.7 thousand tons) and barley (0.1% or 657 tons).

On the other hand, drops are expected in the production of orange (-7.2% or 1.1 million tons), sugar cane (-3.8% or 24.6 million tons), Arabica coffee (-3 ,1% or 62.9 thousand tons), corn 2nd harvest (-2.0% or 1.2 million tons), oats (-1.1% or 11.5 thousand tons), cotton (-1.0% or 60, 2 thousand tons) and wheat (-0.6% or 46.9 thousand tons).
