The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported today (11) that the production of cereals, legumes and oilseeds for 2020 was estimated at 246.7 million tons, 2.2% above the 2019 harvest, with 5.3 million tons more. The research predicts that the Brazilian harvest should be the largest in the institute's historical series, which began in 1975.
According to the survey, the area to be harvested is 64.3 million hectares, 1.7% above that of 2019 (1.1 million hectares more).
Main products from the record harvest
The estimate is for a record in soybean production and the cotton harvest, with an increase of 8.7% for soybeans, with 123.3 million tons, and 1.6% for herbaceous cotton (seed), with 7 million of tons.
Rice, corn and soybeans are the three main products, which, together, represented 93.2% of the production estimate and accounted for 87.2% of the area to be harvested. In relation to the previous year, there was an increase of 1.3% in the corn area, 2.4% in the soybean area, 5.8% in the herbaceous cotton area and a drop of 2.5% in the rice area.
A drop of 4.4% for corn is expected, with total production output of 96.2 million tons (27 million tons of corn in the first harvest and 69.1 million tons in the second).
Mato Grosso leads as the largest national grain producer, with a share of 27.1%, followed by Paraná (15.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (14.2%), Goiás (9.9%), Mato Grosso do Sul (7. 9%) and Minas Gerais (6%), which, together, represented 80.9% of the national total. Regarding the participation of Brazilian regions, the Central-West has 45.3%; the South, 32.6%; the Southeast, 9.8%; the Northeast, 8.2%; and the North, 4.1%.
