The Argentine Ministry of Agroindustry made official, through resolution 4/2017, the opening of a public consultation on biotechnological events that had their evaluation (Second Phase) completed by the National Advisory Commission on Agricultural Biotechnology (Conabia). The objective, according to the government, is to expand dialogue with society before releasing these genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Conabia announces that it is open to receiving “comments of a technical nature” from any person or civil society organization, which will be accepted for a period of 60 days (counting from the last day of February 20th). The Commission states that it will evaluate the technical merit of the contributions and, deeming it necessary, promises to review the process for evaluating the transgenic event to forward to the competent authorities.
In its resolution, the Ministry of Agroindustry recalls that the Argentine Republic is producing relevant advances in biotechnology: “Therefore, it perceives a growing interest on the part of private and official research institutes, as well as companies, in increasing their lines of work with organisms genetically modified plants, animals and microorganisms for agricultural use”.
“This resolution reaffirms the commitment to permanent dialogue between the State and society, making its activities transparent and guaranteeing its participation in the processes of regulation and adoption of technology by the agricultural sector”, concludes the Argentine government’s resolution.
