Goiás leads sunflower production

Producers from Goiás have invested in sunflower as a second crop for the 2020/2021 season. The expectation is that the State will consolidate itself as first place in the national grain ranking, with production of 33.8 thousand tons, which represents an increase of 2.7% in relation to the previous harvest. The data comes from the 7th survey of the 2020/2021 harvest, released by the National Supply Company (Conab), this Thursday (04/08).

The increase is partly explained by the growth in the planted area, which should reach 20 thousand hectares (increase of 2%), and productivity, which is estimated at 1.7 tons per hectare (increase of 0.5%). According to Conab, planting in the State has already been completed and the cultivars used are quite efficient in producing roots under adverse weather conditions. Harvest is scheduled for the end of June and beginning of July.

In the assessment of the Secretary of State for Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Antônio Carlos de Souza Lima Neto, the leading position in national production, which is estimated for Goiás, contributes to the State's economy on several fronts. “Our producers have an active industry in the State that buys this production to manufacture oil, especially in the south of the State, and this increases the demand for cultivation, becoming a good alternative for the second crop that was recently planted”, he assesses.

For the secretary, these favorable scenario conditions in the State of Goiás contribute to the generation of jobs in the countryside and in the city, especially in industry. “It generates wealth and support for several families. That's why this diversification is very important. We have excellent numbers in soybean and corn production, which are flagships of the economy, but it is interesting to note this investment in other crops as it boosts the growth of other activities throughout the State.”

According to data from the latest municipal-level survey, carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the largest sunflower producers in the State are the municipalities of Piracanjuba, Vianópolis and Caldas Novas.

In the country, production should reach 50.4 million tons, a decrease of 32%. The total planted area is 30.9 thousand hectares. In addition to Goiás, sunflower is only produced in Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul.
