Forum reinforces the importance of wheat for the production system

Production and profitability in wheat cultivation were the main themes of the Wheat Forum, held on the afternoon of this Wednesday, 4th, in the central auditorium of the Expodireto Cotrijal Park. Despite being highlighted by the speakers as a culture “that does not excite” producers in general, it was reinforced as an important alternative within the production system.

Cláudio Kapp Júnior, researcher at the Rural Economy Sector at Fundação ABC, brought results of research carried out between 1995 and 2018, covering 25 crops in an area of 422 thousand hectares of wheat in Paraná and São Paulo. The final result showed a profit of around R$ 230.00 per hectare. “This is expressive. It shows that wheat is very important within the production system and a good winter option. It is not the only one, but the producer can introduce wheat to increase the profitability levels of his property”.

The researcher stated that the producer is used to normally evaluating an independent, isolated harvest. Therefore, you may find a negative balance for wheat and find that the crop is not profitable on your property. “However, the research proved that in an average of good and bad years, wheat was more profitable than green cover, which has no revenue counterpart”, he commented.

The coordinator of Grupo Agros' consultancy, Carlos André Fiorin, recommended that producers plan crops, taking into account the reality of each region, and pay attention to production costs, which have seen a significant increase in the last five years. “It doesn’t necessarily need to make a profit, but it has to cover at least part of the costs within the property”, he pointed out.

For Fiorin, if the producer reaches a minimum average of 60 bags/hectare, he can increase the profitability of his property. “If the producer sells this production at a value of R$ 44.00 per bag, there will be R$ 1,000.00 left to help with the costs of other sectors of the property”.

Paulo Cezar Vieira Pires, president of the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of RS (FecoAgro/RS), emphasized that of the 10 million tons of wheat consumed in Brazil, 2 million tons are produced in RS.

He did not present numbers, but made a point of mentioning the benefits of the cereal in the production system, such as straw formation, better control of pests, diseases and weeds and optimization of machinery and labor. “If you’re going to plant wheat, plant it well. The producer wants to get results. Increase productivity without spending more for it”, he concluded.
