Ukrainian exports delayed due to lack of inspection on vessels

This Monday (24), the spokeswoman for the United Nations (UN), Ismini Palla, said that work in Ukrainian ports located on the Black Sea is progressing at a slow pace, which could compromise exports of agricultural commodities.

“There are currently more than 150 ships waiting in Istanbul to move and these delays have the potential to cause disruptions to the supply chain and port operations,” explained Palla.

All vessels docking in Ukrainian ports must be inspected by teams from the Joint Coordination Center (JCC), which involves Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and the UN. According to the spokeswoman, the JCC has already increased the number of inspection groups to five.

The delay in work comes amid the attempt to extend the agreement that makes Ukrainian exports viable, which lasts until November 22. Since August 1, when the agreement began, 386 ships have left Black Sea ports loaded with 8.8 million tons of agricultural products, as reported by Ukraine's Ministry of Infrastructure.

The Ukrainian ministry also accuses Russia of delaying inspections of ships in the Bosphorus Strait, which connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara.
