Total beef exports rise 2% in September, but prices fall

Total beef exports in September (fresh + processed) reached 166,366 tonnes, an increase of 2% over September 2019, which was 163,371 tonnes. In revenue there was a drop of 2% compared to last year, with US$ 668.7 million against US$ 679.8 million. This was the first time that there was a comparative drop in prices obtained for Brazilian beef abroad this year. Since January, the sector has seen significant increases in dollars, reaching 40% of growth last June. The information comes from the Brazilian Association of Refrigerators (ABRAFRIGO), which compiled the total data released this week by the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), through the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex/Decex).

In the year to date, beef exports registered a growth of 10% in relation to 2019. 1 million 460 thousand tons were handled until September compared to 1 million 332 thousand tons in the same period of 2019. In terms of revenue, the result is more expressive: in 2019, until September, US$ 5.1 billion were obtained and this year sales reached US$ 6.1 billion, growth of 20% in foreign exchange. The main buyer of Brazilian products continues to be China. Through the mainland and the city state of Hong Kong, China has so far acquired 839,104 tons compared to 519,653 tons in the same period in 2019, which meant a share of 57.4% in total Brazilian beef exports. In September, Chinese purchases reached 96,385 tons (in July they were 108 thousand tons and in August 108 thousand tons).

Until September, Egypt was the second largest buyer of Brazilian product, with 101,416 tons (-28.3% compared to 2019). Third was Chile, with 60,074 tons (- 30.8%). Fourth was Russia, with 46,242 tons (-13.9%). In fifth place is the United States, with 40,602 tons and growth of 40.5% in imports. Saudi Arabia came in sixth place with 32,834 tonnes (+4.7%), Philippines in seventh with 29,813 tonnes (+22.4%) and the United Arab Emirates in eighth place with 29,741 tonnes (-53.3%).
