Soybean and pork exports and good rice prices are highlights of the Agricultural Bulletin

From January to May, SC exported the largest volume of soybeans in the historical series since 2015. In May, Santa Catarina broke another record in pork exports. Santa Catarina soybeans also reached an unprecedented number of sales abroad that month. The average price of cattle and rice are other good news from the June Agricultural Bulletin. The document is issued monthly by the Epagri Center for Socioeconomics and Agricultural Planning (Epagri/Cepa), with an analysis of the main agricultural products in Santa Catarina.

Santa Catarina exported 51.72 thousand tons of pork (fresh, processed and offal) in May, an increase of 46.1% compared to the previous month and 35.3% above the volume exported in May 2019. Revenue for the month was of US$ 113.60 million, an increase of 41.5% compared to the previous month and 44.4% compared to May 2019. These amounts represent a historic record for pork exports in a single month, both in value and quantity . In the first five months of the year, Santa Catarina's pork exports increased by 18.5% in quantity and 40.9% in value, compared to the same period in 2019. The State was responsible for 51.8% of revenue and 52 .5% of the amount of pork exported by Brazil this year.

Chicken from Santa Catarina also continued to recover on the foreign market in May, but still below the volume achieved last year. Last month, Santa Catarina exported 96.54 thousand tons of chicken meat (fresh and processed), an increase of 28.5% compared to April, but a drop of 33.5% compared to May 2019. Revenues, by in turn, reached the amount of US$ 145.25 million, an increase of 18.9% compared to April and a drop of 40.8% compared to May 2019. From January to May, Santa Catarina's sales of chicken meat abroad reached 423.18 thousand tons, with revenue of US$ 695.44 million, a drop of 32.6% in quantity and 35.7% in value compared to the same period in 2019. The state was responsible for 26.2% of revenue generated by exports Brazilian chicken meat production this year.

The average price of cattle in Santa Catarina in the first weeks of June is 0.4% higher than the previous month and 21.7% above the value paid in June 2019. In the case of milk, the average price in May paid to producers in Santa Catarina it should be well below that of April. Furthermore, industries are encouraging a reduction in production. Even in the middle of the off-season and with a reduction in production due to drought, they claim that the market does not absorb current production and stocks are growing.

Grains

According to the Epagri/Cepa Agricultural Bulletin, shipments from Santa Catarina of the soybean complex, from January to May, totaled more than 1.15 million tons, a record volume registered since 2015. Prices paid for the grain also evolved in Santa Catarina, with an increase of 9.57% in the relationship between May and April, and of 33% in the comparison between the months of May 2020 and 2019. Since February the price increase was 23%.

Prices of paddy and milled rice are also on the rise in the state. Another good news is the growth in production and productivity in the 2019/20 cereal harvest compared to the previous agricultural period.

In the month of May, prices paid to carioca bean producers remained stable in the states of the Southern region. For black bean producers, the price variation between the months of April and May was positive at 16%. This increase in prices is motivated, above all, by the low supply of product, resulting from the losses caused by the prolonged drought that compromised the second bean harvest, especially in the south of the country.

The start of harvesting the second corn crop in the Brazilian Center-West, which accounts for 70% of national production, increases the supply of the product on the market, which should put downward pressure on prices in the coming months. In May, the monthly average price of corn in Santa Catarina was R$43.05/sc of 60kg, 1.9% lower than in April and 18.7% lower than in May 2019.

Around 25% of wheat crops have already been implemented in Santa Catarina, with conditions considered very good for all producing regions. The low supply for sale in the domestic market and the strong demand have maintained national prices at favorable levels for producers.

Other crops

Santa Catarina ended the marketing of the 2019/20 garlic harvest with satisfactory results for producers. From this month onwards, prices tend to decrease, due to the entry into the market of the product from the Brazilian cerrado harvest and the normalization of the situation in Chinese ports. In May, China was the largest supplier of garlic to Brazil, surpassing Argentina, which had been leading since November 2019.

The marketing of the 2019/20 Santa Catarina onion harvest ended in May. The harvest ended with prices rising, due to the low supply of the vegetable on the market, caused by the end of the harvest in Santa Catarina, restrictions on the import of Argentine products and the reduction in production in the Northeast.

Cassava has been experiencing a drop in prices in Santa Catarina since 2017. The harvest begins with prices similar to 2019. On the other hand, the product from Santa Catarina has been conquering the international market. Tapioca stands out in exports to Portugal and the United States, as well as other countries. As a result, demand increases for regional cassava production.

In response to the decrease in global demand, tobacco production in southern Brazil, including Santa Catarina, declined. In Santa Catarina, according to a survey by Epagri/Cepa, the area planted with tobacco reduced 6.1% compared to the previous harvest and the yield was slightly higher than that obtained in 2018/19, an increase of 1.2%. The result was a reduction of 1.1% in tobacco production in Santa Catarina compared to the previous harvest.
