The Port of Paranaguá handled 20% more cargo for export in January this year compared to the same month in 2018, the Administration of the Ports of Paranaguá and Antonina (Appa) said in a note. The drier weather in January this year contributed to the advance – in January 2018 it rained for 13 days; last month, just 8. “Together, bulk bran, wheat, soybeans and corn totaled 1.87 million tons exported”, says the note, highlighting soybeans, which represented 575.57 thousand tons of this total (+59% in January compared to January 2018). Corn, in turn, grew by 50% in the period, to 259.08 thousand tons. The volume imported in January this year reached 1.85 million tons, or 14% more compared to January last year.
Fertilizers continue to be the main product imported via ports in Paraná. In Paranaguá, 977,073 tons were unloaded, an increase of 20% compared to the same month in 2018. At the Port of Antonina, movement totaled 110,427 tons of cargo.
Wheat imports resumed in January, according to Appa. If in January 2018 there was no movement with imported cereal, last month, 64.43 thousand tons were landed.
Container cargo movement was also higher at the end of January, with an increase of 9%. In its own unit of measurement (TEUs, a unit equivalent to 20 feet), there were 62,617 containers handled in January this year: 29,581 for export, 33,036 for import.
Among the most exported cargoes per container are wood, frozen poultry meat, paper and derivatives, bran, soybeans and sugar. Imports include fertilizers, reactors, boilers and machinery, and plastics.
