US and China set to resume trade talks

A White House official said the United States (US) and China will resume trade talks at the ministerial level in Washington next week.

This Tuesday (1st), White House Foreign Trade Advisor, Peter Navarro, declared that the American representative would meet with Chinese Vice Premier, Liu He, on October 10th.

These will be the first negotiations at ministerial level since meetings held in Shanghai in July. Liu is expected to meet with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

Washington and Beijing have been imposing increasingly high tariffs on each other and now the trade dispute is taking a toll on their economies.

US President Donald Trump is eager to ask China to buy more American agricultural products. This has led to speculation that the two sides will discuss a temporary agreement in the area of trade in agricultural goods. Some hard-line Trump administration officials, however, want a more comprehensive deal to be reached, also covering alleged Chinese violations of intellectual property rights.
