One of the big news next year for Argentina should be the release of lemon exports to the United States. The information comes from Gonzalo Tanoira, president of the company San Miguel – one of the largest lemon producers in the neighboring country.
“We are in the final bureaucratic stages of the process to release our lemon in the USA. It is very doable for the next harvest. What has been happening in the country is very important for [the province of] Tucumán and regional development in general,” stated Tanoira.
Argentina's current production of lemons is 1.65 million tons annually, with a total value of US$ 600 million. No less than 95% of this total is destined for export, and 90% is produced in the province of Tucumán.
Speaking at the Argentine Investment and Business Forum, the executive director of the agroindustry Molinos Rio de La Plata, Amancio Oneto, argued that the neighboring country needs to take advantage of the opening of this market to develop more strong brands. “Our only product that is worldwide is wine, which has great labels. This is really adding value and being able to provide quality jobs. The generation of value and jobs with the export of unbranded products is too low”, he maintained.
