Weak El Niño brings risk of frost in the South

Meteorologist Celso Oliveira, from Somar, warns of the possible occurrence of late cold and frost between the end of August and the beginning of September. The problem, according to him, is that the possible 'El Niño' phenomenon (which has not yet been confirmed) must be of weak intensity.

“The 'El Niño' phenomenon has a name with a very strong connotation. When it is mentioned, it is already associated with excessive rain in the South, drought in the North and Northeast. Another effect is to imagine that, if there is 'El Niño', it won't be cold, and the risk of frost is lower”, he recalls.

The expert emphasizes that, as the event is expected to be weak, it is also important to be cautious regarding the end of winter and beginning of spring. Care must be taken even more in the second half of August and the first half of September, when farmers are already starting to install spring crops, or even wheat becomes more susceptible to frost.
“As the phenomenon is weak, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have a late cold. There is a risk of having some cold waves, although more spaced out and not as frequent as normal, but there is a possibility of late cold weather between the end of August and the beginning of September”, he concludes.
