The use of certified palm oil in the European Union (EU) decreased by 1% in 2022 compared to the previous year, according to a survey by trade association FEDIOL announced on November 13.

Last year, the use of sustainable palm oil certified sustainable palm kernel oil (PKO) in Europe totaled 64%, with the share of certified sustainable palm kernel oil (PKO) falling 2% to 45%, said the association, which represents the EU's vegetable oil and protein flour sector.

FEDIOL conducts an annual survey on the volumes of crude palm oil (CPO) and PKO entering the refining plants of participating FEDIOL members in the EU.

Palm oil refineries record lower volumes in 2022, highlighted by a decrease in CSPO and PKO production

Last year, the association's members refined a total volume of 3.03 million tonnes of palm oil, a drop of 7.4% compared to 2021 volumes.

However, the decrease in volume represented a continuation of the downward trend recorded since 2017, the organization said.

Total CSPO volumes reached 1.9 million tonnes, a reduction of -0.5% compared to 2021.

The segregated chain of custody traded most of the CSPO. There has been a steady decrease in the use of the mass balance method. In this method, there is no physical separation of the CSPO. However, the proportion of the certified product is accounted for in the final product.

Monitoring numbers reveal data on PKO in 2022. FEDIOL members refined 343,000 tons, a slight drop of 1% compared to 2021. Total volumes of certified sustainable PKO had a more significant drop, reaching 5% in the same period, as per stated FEDIOL.

Traceability is high, reaching 98% for palm oil and 100% for OMP. This occurs all the way to the palm fruit processing plants.
