“Expectations of production in the center west contributed to maintaining the expectation of growth in grain production, even with the unfavorable weather conditions in the south of the country, which will impact the production of first harvest corn and soybeans, corn is still estimated at 24 .8 million tons”, explains the director of Agricultural Policy and Information at Conab, Sergio De Zen.
On the other hand, in Rio Grande do Sul, the climate scenario presented in December 2021 was quite dry in several producing regions and harmed the situation of some crops. “However, it is worth highlighting that the last harvest was also significantly affected by bad weather and phytosanitary problems, which can balance the comparisons made between the productivity and production estimates obtained in these two periods.”

Currently, total corn production, considering the first, second and third harvests, is estimated at 112.9 million tons, an increase of almost 30%. To date, the average national productivity is estimated at 5,495 kg/ha, indicating, in this survey, a decrease in average yield compared to the 2020/21 harvest.
With a growth of 3.8% in the area and estimated production of 140.5 million tons, soybeans keep the country as the world's largest producer of the oilseed. “Brazil's leadership in agriculture shows the advances made in Brazilian grain production”, highlights the president of Conab, Guilherme Ribeiro. “In addition to the versatility of producers, who are increasingly structured based on the Company's agricultural intelligence information, other gains are the result of the organization and partnership of public and private institutions for the technological development of national agriculture.”
In the case of wheat, the 2021 harvest was completed and the total production volume is 7.7 million tons. The final result was above that obtained last season, despite the climatic adversities, with prolonged periods of drought and the incidence of frosts recorded in part of the cycle, which reduced the productive potential. However, the good increase in planted area seen this year favored the crop's performance.
Other crops also showed good numbers, such as cotton, which grew by 12.5% in the area to be sown, in a total of 1.5 million hectares, and with lint production estimated at 2.7 million tons. Rice saw a reduction of 0.7% in the area to be sown due to the market scenario and expected production of 11.38 million tons. The first harvest of beans followed the trend and had a reduction of 2% in the area to be sown and volume of 988.4 thousand tons, while the total production of beans in the country, adding up the three harvests, is estimated at 3.08 million tons .
In December, with the completion of sowing of most first-crop crops, the estimate of the total area to be cultivated in the country in 2021/22 is 72.1 million hectares, an increase of 4.5% over the previous harvest. In this context, second harvest crops are included, with plantings between January and April, and third harvest crops, between April and June. To calculate production estimates for second and third harvest crops in the 2021/22 cycle, specific statistical methodologies were used, since there is still uncertainty about the area to be cultivated, as well as crop productivity. The areas destined for second and third harvest crops will be updated throughout the next surveys.
