How is the soybean harvest going in Brazil?

The latest information regarding soybean cultivation is encouraging for some Brazilian states. According to the Harvest Progress Bulletin released by the National Supply Company (Conab), in Mato Grosso, the harvest is coming to an end, concentrated mainly in the Eastern region, and the yields achieved have been considered excellent by farmers. In Goiás, the harvest is progressing in all regions, with good grain quality and excellent productivity being achieved.

On the other hand, the situation is not the same in all states. In Rio Grande do Sul, the harvest is progressing slowly, as most areas are not yet ready for trailing. Furthermore, crops vary greatly and the rains that occurred were not enough to reverse the crop failure.

In Minas Gerais, the drier week helped the harvest advance, while in Paraná, the drier weather last week allowed a great advance in the harvest. Although grain damage has been reported, the majority of harvested soybeans have good quality and higher-than-expected productivity. In Santa Catarina, the harvest is progressing with excellent results.

In Maranhão, the harvest has ended in Gerais de Balsas and is starting in the Center and East of the state. In Piauí, good productivity has been achieved in most areas. In Bahia, weather conditions were favorable for harvesting and maturing crops. In Pará, the harvest is nearing the end in the South and Southwest.

Producers who have already closed their operations in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul are collaborating with those most behind, which demonstrates solidarity among Brazilian farmers in times of difficult harvest.

CROP PROGRESS
Week of March 19-25, 2023

In relation to the current harvest, there was an important increase compared to the previous week, reaching 69.1% in 12 states of the country, but still slower than the pace recorded in the previous harvest.

The state with the greatest progress is Mato Grosso, which has already completed 99.2% of the harvest, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul, with 90.0%.

However, some states still show an advance below that recorded in the previous harvest, such as Santa Catarina, which advanced just 10.0% in the last week, and Rio Grande do Sul, which reached just 5.0% of advance.

In general, the progress of the harvest and the productivity achieved so far signal a positive harvest for most states, with emphasis on Mato Grosso and Goiás. However, monitoring the harvest is still necessary to assess possible climate impacts and other factors that can influence production.
