The increase in extreme weather conditions in Brazil has put livestock farmers on alert, facing unseasonal heat waves. Faced with this challenge, the question then arises: how can producers take precautions and avoid significant losses to livestock caused by the “heat”?
Veterinarian Maria Antoanete Brandalize, commercial manager at Quimtia Brasil, highlights the importance of providing quality, fresh water to livestock during periods of high temperatures. “In addition to being treated and drinkable, the water needs to be at an appropriate temperature for consumption. The producer must 'test the water', placing his hand to feel if it is in ideal conditions”, emphasizes the expert.
Antoanete emphasizes that the number of drinking fountains available must be sufficient, and regular maintenance of nipples and pacifiers is essential to guarantee quality water. Even with these precautions, animal dehydration is still a possibility. In this sense, the specialist suggests the use of electrolytes, such as Nuvihidrate, a solution of electrolyte salts applied to water, stimulating consumption and reducing the risks of electrolyte imbalance and reduced food intake.
For scenarios of intense rain, the veterinarian warns about the challenges that producers face. Cattle, often damp due to rain, tend to spend more energy to stay warm, impacting animal performance. Antoanete then suggests strategies such as constant ventilation and switching from wet to dry litter, when possible, to mitigate these challenges.
