In Goiás, the sunflower harvest must end on July 15th, according to Normative Instruction No. 01, of January 5th, 2022, from the Goiana Agricultural Defense Agency (Agrodefesa). The objective is to contain volunteer soybean plants (tiguera) that germinate between the rows of sunflower cultivation, after harvesting soybeans, in order to prevent the incidence and spread of the Asian rust pest (Phakopsora pachyrhizi).
According to data released by Agrodefesa, the measure is necessary because of the absence of selective herbicides registered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), which eliminate soybean tigueras, without causing damage to the sunflower plant.
