CNA celebrates suspension of coffee imports

The CNA (Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil) published an official note celebrating “as a victory for national agriculture the decision of President Michel Temer to suspend, on a temporary basis, the import of conilon coffee”. According to the entity, the President of the Republic responded to the appeal of rural producers who, through the CNA and the Parliamentary Coffee Front, ensured that there was sufficient stock to meet the industry's demand.

“Coffee imports were practically defined. Initially, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply – MAPA – published Normative Instruction No. 07, dated February 17, which established the phytosanitary requirements for the import of conilon coffee from Vietnam. Then, the resolution of the CAMEX Executive Management Committee including conilon in LETEC (the Mercosur exception list) and setting an import quota with tariff reduction. With President Temer's decision, the CAMEX Council meeting that would endorse the resolution – already published in the Official Gazette – was cancelled”, explains the CNA in the statement.

“We have therefore reached an important stage in the defense of agriculture, a sector that generates employment, income and contributes decisively to the development of the country. The CNA thanks parliamentarians for the support received and will continue working to ensure that coffee imports are suspended in permanent character”, states the note signed by the president of the Confederation, João Martins da Silva Junior.
