Since the passage of the extratropical cyclone in Rio Grande do Sul, representatives of the federal and state governments have been mobilized by the calamity situation to help the victims affected by the natural disaster. Losses cannot yet be quantified.
During visits to affected municipalities, Agriculture teams were able to see that in rural areas, small farmers were the most affected. There were losses in production, livestock and infrastructure, especially for riverside residents dedicated to vegetable production, poultry farming, pig farming and dairy farming. The damage also affects agro-industrial units.
To date, the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company (Emater/RS-Ascar) has prepared a preliminary report that indicates that 50 municipalities, 665 localities and 10,787 properties have been affected. Furthermore, in relation to infrastructure, the weather event damaged 4,456.8 kilometers of local roads and caused production flow problems in 197 communities.
Climate disaster causes significant losses in agriculture and livestock: Recovery efforts underway
The losses were significant, especially corn and wheat, which had large areas affected and a high volume of production lost due to the cyclone. On the other hand, in livestock farming, 29,356 animals died, including beef and dairy cattle, pigs and poultry, and 370 boxes of bees and 35.5 tons of fish were lost. Therefore, the situation becomes even worse considering the damage to both agriculture and livestock.
However, it is important to highlight that Emater/RS-Ascar is working tirelessly to provide assistance to affected communities. Emergency actions were previously carried out to mitigate the immediate impacts of the disaster. Subsequently, the focus will be on recovering damaged areas and supporting the reconstruction of productive activities.
Therefore, the joint effort of local authorities, the community and support institutions will be crucial for the recovery of these regions hit by the cyclone. In conclusion, it is essential that everyone works together to overcome the challenges that arise and rebuild the affected areas.
Response and support measures underway for municipalities severely hit by the cyclone
Data is still missing from three severely affected municipalities: Arroio do Meio, Muçum and Taquari.
As measures to combat this, the acting President of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin, has already announced the availability of R$ 741 million in budgetary resources distributed across several actions. R$ 405 million of this amount has already been made available, of which the Ministry of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger (MDS) will use around R$ 56 million for the Food Acquisition Program (PAA) with the transfer of food baskets.
The resources are also intended for rural development to support small producers, with an amount of R$ 4.6 thousand non-refundable. The assistant secretary of Agricultural Policy, Wilson Vaz, who represents the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), is part of the delegation that is visiting the state.
