China releases beef shipments from Brazil

Recent information shows that China once again authorized shipments of certified beef from Brazil this Tuesday. However, this measure applies to meat certified before the embargo, which took place on September 4th.

The announcement was published this Tuesday (23/11) by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) and, in AgResource's view, the release of new batches is a matter of time. China was Brazil's biggest buyer in this regard until shipments were suspended on September 4, after two atypical cases of mad cow were reported in Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso. The suspension was determined by the Brazilian government itself and complied with a health protocol signed with China, which provides for the interruption of trade in the event of the disease being identified.

Taking the Asian country into account, China is the main Brazilian beef market, purchasing almost half of the approximately 2 million tons of meat that the country exports. With the embargo, Brazil's total protein exports fell by 43% in October, to 108.6 thousand tons, compared to the same month last year, according to the Brazilian Association of Meat Packers (Abrafrigo).

Just this week, information emerged that Russia had authorized the purchase of meat from three Brazilian companies, which would be a kind of relief from the Chinese shutdown. According to a Reuters report, Russia plans to establish a duty-free import quota for up to 200,000 tonnes of beef in 2022 to increase domestic supply. Brazil is the world's largest exporter of beef.
