Brics: Minister of Agriculture defends interconnection of global food markets

Minister Tereza Cristina (Agriculture, Livestock and Supply) received this Tuesday (24), in São Paulo, the Ministers of Agriculture of the countries that make up the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). At a dinner at the Federation of Industries of São Paulo (Fiesp), the minister and the entity's president, Paulo Skaf, received around 50 guests.

When receiving the ministers, Tereza Cristina said that the Brics countries have made good use of the complementarity of their economies, especially in the agricultural sector, to the benefit of our societies.

“The liberalization of agricultural trade and the interconnection of global food markets play a fundamental role in food and nutritional security policies, expanding and diversifying the supply of products, taking into account the well-being of society as a whole, including consumers urban people, and especially those who are poorer”.

She also highlighted that there is a lot of room for long-term strategic partnerships, with reciprocal gains. “In this sense, the fraternal relationship that we were able to build is, without a doubt, a great guarantor”.

In relation to Brazil, she recalled that the increase in productivity in the field, with successive records in harvests, sustainably originates products offered to more than 200 markets. “We have contributed and will continue to contribute to food and nutritional security across the planet, providing quality food, at fair prices, to more than a billion people per day. Many of these, of course, reside with our Brics partners, who establish themselves as strategic allies for mutual benefits”, he said.

The minister also recalled that the five Brics countries represent 42% of the population and 23% of world GDP. “We occupy 26% of the planet's surface, hold 29% of its fresh water and move almost 20% of global trade”, he highlighted.

Delegations from the other four countries also offered greetings during the meeting, highlighting the importance of agriculture for the world, and the fact that the BRICS countries are united. Businesspeople from various agribusiness sectors highlighted the sustainability and quality of Brazilian agricultural products.

The ministers will meet on the 25th and 26th of September in Bonito, in Mato Grosso do Sul for the 9th Meeting of the Brics Agriculture Ministers. The meeting's theme will be technological innovation in agriculture in the context of an increase in the world population and demand for food. Ministers will debate issues related to food security and environmental sustainability at a regional and global level.
