Brazil supports Chinese candidate for FAO leadership

The Brazilian government supports the candidacy of Qu Dongyu, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Affairs of the People's Republic of China, as Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The elections will take place on June 22 at FAO headquarters in Rome during the 42nd session of the Conference of the Organization. The next Director-General of FAO will replace the Brazilian José Graziano da Silva, whose second term as head of the Organization expires on August 31, 2019.

Qu Dongyu is a PhD in Agricultural Science and Environment. He has over thirty years of experience in planning, policy-making, international cooperation and management, as well as serving as deputy minister of agriculture in China since June 2015. He visited Brazil last March when he held meetings at the Ministry Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply.

In her recent mission to Asia, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply Tereza Cristina announced the Brazilian government's support for the Chinese candidate during bilateral meetings with the Minister of the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China, Ni Yuefeng, and with the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Han Changfu.
