According to experts consulted by Agrolink, despite requiring monitoring, it is unlikely that the cloud of locusts currently found in Argentina will arrive in Brazil. If, on the one hand, it is important to monitor the movement of the pest, on the other hand, there is concern about the small number of products registered to control this insect in Brazil.
According to agronomist Joelson Mader, consultant at Blue Pine Assessoria e Representação de Produtos Agropecuários, there are only two active ingredients registered in the country against the species Schistocerca cancellata: “There is a pyrethroid, Deltamethrin, which offers shock action, and a product for control of young stages, Diflubenzuron”, points out the consultant.
AGRICULTURAL AVIATION AT THE POSITION
Sindag (National Union of Agricultural Aviation Companies) made itself available to public bodies with its fleet of 426 agricultural aircraft to combat the infestation. The entity sent a letter to the Rio Grande do Sul and federal governments to warn against the spread of the locust plague in Rio Grande do Sul and other Brazilian states.
According to Sindag, an operation of this nature requires a government effort, with due authorization from official bodies. “In this sense, we forwarded a letter from Sindag itself, endorsed by our office, to the Ministry of Agriculture. Minister Tereza Cristina herself responded to our appeal by accepting the support of Sindag”, highlighted federal deputy Jerônimo Goergen.
The parliamentarian also said that an operation of this nature requires a very quick response from public authorities to have the expected effects. “Rural producers in Rio Grande do Sul are already facing a very severe drought. Another adversity of this nature would be extremely terrible for our agricultural production”, he concluded.
