The president of the Brazilian Association of Airlines (ABEAR), Jurema Monteiro, highlighted this Tuesday (16) Brazil's potential to be self-sufficient in the production of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and be a surplus exporter to other markets.
Furthermore, the executive highlighted the country's leading role during a public hearing at the Senate Infrastructure Committee, which debated the Future Fuel Bill. The session was chaired by Veneziano Vital do Rêgo (MDB-PB) with representatives from Petrobras, ministries, senators and representative entities.
“The production of SAF is still in its infancy in the world. Brazil has already demonstrated its vanguard in biofuels, with ethanol, and has the conditions to lead in the production of BioQAV and other fuels”, stated Jurema. Furthermore, she highlighted the need for incentive policies to make SAF competitive, allowing the sector to decarbonize without harming its growth and democratization.
According to her, with the current amount of surplus raw material it would be possible to produce 9 billion liters of SAF annually. “This would make the airline sector self-sufficient, as shown by a study by consultancy firm RSB and BOEING. Today, airlines consume 7.2 billion liters. Therefore, it would be possible for Brazil to export 1.8 billion liters of surplus”, he added. Jurema highlighted measures taken by the Brazilian airline sector: fleet modernization and route review to reduce decarbonization.
